Want To Get Your Art Noticed?

Submissions are open for Sooke Fine Arts Society’s annual art show

Calling all Island creatives! Here’s your chance to showcase your talent

If you’ve been holed up getting into your creative flow all winter, it’s time to bring all your work out of the shadows.

The Sooke Fine Arts Society is here to spotlight all forms of art made here on BC’s coast, and the artists who’ve created them.

Their annual show is going into its 37th year running and is the Island’s longest-running juried fine art show.

Plus, there’s over $12,000 in prize money to be awarded to work that really stands out from the crowd!

Beyond displaying artwork, the show’s success is attributed to its focus on fostering public engagement.

“Created to encourage and promote a greater understanding and appreciation for the arts…as well as hosting public learning opportunities to demonstrate artistic technique and expertise,” says the Sooke Fine Art Facebook page.

They accept art submissions of any medium, from paintings, sculptures, woodwork, photography, fibre arts, ceramics, and hand-formed jewelry. The doors are wide open.

“Artwork must be the original creation of the artist with an emphasis on technical ability as well as artistic accomplishment,” says the show’s website. “Work that is inventive, displays creativity and shows a fresh perspective is encouraged.”

Once submitted, a jury panel will choose about 375 pieces of all different materials and styles to fill the show and go on sale.

The show will be accompanied by talks, guided tours, live music, and demonstrations to help all viewers truly get to know each piece.

These awards will be distributed in multiple categories, including art excellence, social commentary, designers’ choice, and people’s choice.

“Artists and patrons alike are telling us that they’re eager to experience and enjoy artworks in person again, and we anticipate great exposure for our artists this year, especially after the success of last year’s return to the live show format,” Terrie Moore, executive director of the Sooke Fine Arts Society told the North Island Gazette.

The Sooke Fine Arts Show occurs from July 29 to Aug. 7 at the SEAPARC arena in Sooke. Art submissions will be accepted until June 1.

Interested artists should visit the Society’s website for more information and to submit their works online.
