Youth summer camps will focus on both learning and fun

Youth Academy offers summer camps in Comox Valley, Campbell River, and Port Alberni.

Family Day is right around the corner. But it’s not too early to think about fun summer activities.

The North Island College Youth Academy is set to release its summer camp schedule on Feb. 16.

The camps are for youth aged 9 to 14. It’s a fun summer camp experience, with a focus on learning cool science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) skills.

Youth will have a chance to get inside NIC’s facilities. This includes the science and computer labs, classrooms, and green spaces. They’ll take part in games and activities. And don’t worry, they’ll spend lots of time outside as well.

Camps will be held in the Comox Valley, Campbell River, and Port Alberni.

According to NIC youth & community outreach liaison Ali Sandholm, past summer camps have been popular.

“We are very encouraged by our level of engagement from the community and the positive feedback we have received,” Sandholm told the Campbell River Mirror. “Families value the opportunity to send kids to camp where they can learn, gain skills and confidence, and have fun at the same time.”

To make the summer camps more accessible, NIC provides a fee subsidy to participants who meet the application criteria. Participants can apply for the fee subsidy when registration opens on April 5.
