Thanks to new investments from the federal and provincial governments, you will be able to! At least, you will in a couple of years.
Funding for the project is coming through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The program helps communities like Port Alberni build infrastructure that makes them more resilient.
The federal government will invest $962,220, and the provincial government will invest $1,539,433.
The Connect the Keys project aims to build a path from Harbour Quay all the way to Victoria Quay. The path will get built in stages. The first section will connect Harbour Quay with Tyee Landing. The second section will run from Gertrude street to the bridge across Roger Creek.
The city hopes to start construction on these two sections sometime in 2022.
When it’s finished, folks will have a path that connects the water with parks, shops, and pubs downtown.
It’ll be a great place to meet friends and run into neighbours. Heck, it may even help rebuild those social ties that got frayed because of COVID protections.
